Fantastic Gardens of Long Island was started in 1960 by my father, Michael Tifford. He grew up right near the Bronx Botanical Gardens in Bronx, NY. That is where he fell in love with all types of plants, specifically perennials, shrubs, and trees.
A new era has arrived especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, not only are the plants that our grandparents taught us to love are rebounding in popularity, there is a whole bunch of new and sensational plants that our parents (me included) can barely pronounce! With the help of our “new” business partner, Jorge Sisalima, and his family are propelling us to the new horizons. Jorge has been with us for 18 years having learned the love of plants from his grandmother; he is bringing new energy to our fantastic business.
We love what we do. Mother nature can be a pain but where would we be without her? Join us on this new leg of our newest endeavor and help us grow out motto- ‘growing with long island’ into so much more!

Pureplay nursery, Six Greenhouses, Controlled Showroom Overheads. Well-organized greenhouses and open spaces were densely packed with plants, in neat rows. Flowering (perennials & annuals), full range of houseplants, succulents, cacti, airplants. Pots & hanging baskets. Varying size configurations. Plenty of temptation and opportunity for runaway imagination. Staff was helpful and stretched to limit by aspiring plant parents. And, all our picks turned out to be robust. They've successfully stood up to the test of time and, most importantly, my lousy gardening - which was not the outcome in experimentation with other curated nurseries. Well worth an 80 mile return drive. Best part is...... We were pointed to this nursery by family horticulturist in SFO Bay Area!!
This place has traumatized me. I got and infestation of aphids, mealy bugs, AND spider mites from this place. I know for a fact it’s from here because I haven’t bought plants anywhere else. The whole place crawling with pests. Such a shame
Such a beautiful garden center full of amazing plants, unique items, and a friendly staff. A must-see!
The uusal nursey staples are carried here, but where Fantastic Garden excels is the availability of uncommon houseplants: tropicals, cacti, and succulents. One can purchase different sizes of the same species, depending on your budget.
Really enjoyed my time at Fantasy Gardens today. Cynthia and Marjorie were super kind, helpful and took their time helping me to find a housewarming gift. Good prices, amazing selection and they helped to pot the plants beautifully. Wanted to stay there all day. Go check out their air plants too! Great affordable gift idea. Thanks for the experience.
